What position?  If you mean removing the 'Viewport 0 0' setting, that has no
effect.  I was doing an 'xrandr ... --right-of LVDS' to set the
relative position once X was up.

No visible effect.

I should have mentioned that when VGA-0 is on, the monitors OSD will
show the set resolution and refresh rate in spite of the fact that it
displays nothing else.  I can also drag windows from LVDS to VGA-0 and
back, but they are not displayed on VGA-0.

When VGA-0 is off the monitor looks for a signal and then goes to sleep.
