Here's a suggestion I forgot, maybe because your xorg and/or driver version
might not be new enough for it to be valid. In Section "Monitor" try adding:
	Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768"

Asking on a Debian mailing list might provide more help. Looking in its bug
tracker might be useful too. Another thing to try is the xorg.conf generated
by an Edgy or Feisty live CD.
