intel modesetting compilation without xserver 1.3

What's the last point in time that the intel modesetting driver would
compile without having xserver 1.3?  Since the recent modifications have
made it more difficult to compile on current systems, knowing the last
time it worked easily might be helpful to those wanting to use it.
Bonus points will be awarded for providing the git command to check it
out from that point.
