Speeding up X's start time

Tried the latest git version of today and it still fails.

It's an acer travelmate 292 LCi with an 855GM chip and a native
resolution of 1024x768. If I manualle disable the LCD output before
xserver start (with i810switch lcd off), it works fine (switching back
to a VC then powers off the LVDS again), but with the LCD enabled when
starting X, it stays black. If I comment out the power-off code of the
LVDS in the code, it works, too.

I'm willing to try patches and try to make it work for me.
