Look inside /proc/<X server PID>/fd and see if there are multiple
fontpath.d dirs opened. There's a leak in libXfont which may
exaust the number of X clients allowed.

I've sent a patch to this list some time ago and also attached it
to bugzilla: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11570

Your problem may be caused by something else, of course, but it
would be nice if someone could apply the patch to libXfont and
release a new version.
