Laptop and external monitor/projector setup?

Hi,
I am running Fedora 7 on a Dell XPS M1210 laptop. The laptop has an
internal 1280x800 display, and I have an external 1280x1024 LCD
monitor that I plug into the CGA port.
I am using version 1.3.0 of the server (xrandr 1.2), and version 2.0.0
of the modesetting intel driver.
With the external monitor connected, both displays function correctly,
but the smaller built in display only shows the top part of the
desktop, with the lower part cut off, because the screen size is set
to 1280x1024.
What I'd like to be able to achieve is having both displays connected
simultaneously, and both showing the full desktop at their correct
(but different) resolutions.
What do I need to do to make this work?
Also, I'd like to be able to switch either display off using the Fn-F*
key - currently that doesn't do anything.
Currently, xrandr tells me:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
VGA connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 338mm x 270mm

Many thanks for your help with this
Jonathan.
