Hmm. Playing with PowerStrip in Windows it turns out that I can  
reproduce the effect I'm seeing in Ubuntu by flippy the polarity of  
the HSync. In Windows it's +HSync +VSync.

However I've just changed my xorg.conf to have +HSync / +VSync and it  
doesn't make any difference. Is it possible that the driver isn't  
setting the HS polarity correctly for some reason?
