Why does the Xorg server reset the output when last client disconnects?

Next time someone gets a bloated X server do this:
    xrestop -b -t 10 > xres_log.txt
wait 9 seconds, then control-C the xrestop.
then kill Firefox and get another xres_log.txt
 and post the xrestop logs files for us to see.
