Have you given the live ebuilds a try?
Checkout out Donnie's overlay:
git clone http://overlays.gentoo.org/git/dev/dberkholz/
For my live ebuild of cairo, grab my overlay at one of:
git clone git://people.freedesktop.org/~cloos/overlay.git
git clone http://people.freedesktop.org/~cloos/overlay.git
You may need to add some entries to /etc/portage/package.unmask.
With the abolute latest xserver, cairo, libx11 (with xcb in USE)
xcb, x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati, libdrm and mesa it seems to be
better. I'm sure the recent pixman changes helped.
Also be sure to leave aiglx out of USE. The patches pulled in
with that USE flag hurt EXA.
