Sounds like an nvidia chip.  if you are using DVI, you may not be able
to change the mode since due to a limitation in the nv driver.  In
that case you may want to try the binary nvidia driver.  If not, you
can use cvt to generate a mode line, e.g.,

cvt 1280 720 60
or
cvt -r 1280 720 60
for a reduced blanking mode (useful on LCDs).  stick the mode line cvt
generates into the monitor section of your xorg config and add the
mode name to the modes line in the display subsection of the screen
section of your config.
