Yeah, this is an ugly one.  Matthias put in a bunch of new PCI handling 
code for Linux, and it mostly looks like it could handle this case, 
maybe with a few small exceptions (I posted a patch in the bug for one 
of them, comment #35).

But this problem has been around since June of 2006, so releasing again 
with this breakage won't be the end of the world, and now that 
pci-rework has landed, issues like this should be a thing of the past.

It would be good if the initial reporter could test the latest bits of 
both HEAD and the 1.4 branch to see how things look.
