Also, check the output of "ps ax | grep X".  On my home workstation,
this shows:

ross at turalyon:~$ ps ax | grep X
 3514 tty7     Ss+    0:43 /usr/bin/X -quiet -nolisten tcp vt7 -auth /var/run/entrance/:0.Xauth :0
 8843 pts/2    S+     0:00 grep X
