I tried to follow these directions:

I ran into a snag and had to ALSO install dri2proto.
It seems to all work.
lsmod lists i915 (and drm used by it)
I have a nifty install.sh script in a dripkg which complains that I
don't have the latest kernel installed -- but since I do, it's hard to
do much with that...

Okay, I've used a conf file much more like that, and I still get
nothing on the external monitor...
xrandr never seems to recognize the external monitor.
