ssh -Y problems

Greetings;

I have a kubuntu-6.06 LTS box out in my workshop, running emc-2.22, and which
I often check gcode from my nice warm chair here by doing an 'xhost +shop'
after I do a startx on this box, and then an 'ssh -Y -l user_on_that_box' fro
a root terminal here.

This box is a fedora 6 box with all recent updates, and a home built
2.6.24-rc6 kernel, but I've also tried the most recent fedora kernel with
exactly the same results, start the remote application and freeze this
machine as described below.

Recently, when I start the gui for emc by just typing 'emc' here, the emc gui,
has about 90+% of its working screen drawn, usually with just one block to
go, and this machine is frozen solid, not even the toolbar clock is running,
and I have to do a hard reset.

Typing
[root at coyote sbin]# xhost
access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect
INET:shop.coyote.den
SI:localuser:root

is returned.
After an 'ssh -Y -l gene shop' and entering my password:
gene at shop:~$ xhost
access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect
INET:shop.coyote.den
SI:localuser:root

Which looks as it it should work to me. Humm, that response is actually from
this machine because of the -Y, so login without it, and get this:
gene at shop:~$ xhost
xhost: unable to open display ""
gene at shop:~$ xauth list
shop.coyote.den:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 eac1cb61f92a1ab84b569f2ff62673d7
[fe80::230:18ff:fec4:a8b3]:0  MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
eac1cb61f92a1ab84b569f2ff62673d7
shop/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 eac1cb61f92a1ab84b569f2ff62673d7
shop/unix:11 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7d92864d9bea25b66144f3cbfc9c529e
shop/unix:10 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 c2a3bf16801c2465edc171bc2e88794e

Someone on the fedora list said I should be using xauth instead, but the man
page I have is at best confusing, and it doesn't act like the manpage
suggests it should, giving me a shell prompt of xauth: instead of a list of
authorized whatevers.

Damn, now it appears to work... WTF?
[root at coyote ~]# xauth list
coyote.coyote.den/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 66c9d2d0a3babcbcefbdb17180e8e145
coyote.coyote.den:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 66c9d2d0a3babcbcefbdb17180e8e145

Am I doing it wrong, leaving something out?, or what?

Thanks.
