eventually I hope to try and straighten this out, but right now my
focus is on getting 3D out for the new chips.

Well, compiz won't work at the moment on XPRESS chips even if you get
the DRI working since there are texturing problems. Beyond that you
might try hardcoding a vram size in your bios if you have the option
to.
