Thanks a lot for your effort, Paul.
I compiled the module and installed it, but it seems not to work for my 
ALPS device as the "old" one did:

(--) Synaptics touchpad not in use; failing module startup
(--) Reason for the above:  4, 00
couldn't enable device 2

That's what it says. I am using

X.Org X Server 1.4.2
Release Date: 11 June 2008
