I finally found out something greatly helpful: the function xf86SetStrOption()
doesn't _set_ the option, it gets the option, and returns it (as a string,
although there are lookalike functions for other types, like
xf86SetIntOption()). I sure wish I understood the odd turn of mind that let
these functions be defined as "Set" funcs instead of "Get" funcs. Makes no
sense to me, anyhow, but as long as it works, I guess it doesn't matter too much.
OK, well, I have access, besides my regular FreeBSD host, to another host,
running Gentoo Linux. I will be the only one there running an X server, but I
need to be able to kick off the server via ssh, which means the tty won't be a
virtual tty. How can I force Xorg to take the command anyhow, and act (for
instance) as if it were kicked off from the second virtual tty instead of from a
pts? I won't be *using* the X output, getting most of my output from the log
file ...
