The type1 module was hopelessly buggy, and its functionality was
mostly superseded by the freetype module. It has been removed from
the X.Org distribution.

I say mostly, since there is one bit of functionality that the old
type1 module supported and the freetype module doesn't: CID keyed
fonts. CID keyed fonts are fortunately obsolete, and if you have any
remaining, they can be losslessly converted to OpenType/CFF using Free
tools (I recommend Fontforge).
