Meta Keys Trouble (xorg-server-1.4.2)

Having some really weird problems after I upgraded to
xorg-server-1.4.2.

I first had trouble with ALT-TAB to work, but that solved itself when
I launched, then killed compiz. Every time I start xorg, this is one
of the combinations that won't work.

One thing I find no workaround for, is being able to write f.ex curly
braces (holding down right_alt and hitting 9).

If I look at what I typed in emacs, it says "ESC-9". 

The keys show up as Alt_R and 9 in xev, as they should. 

So, everything looks normal, but hitting those keys in combination,
doesn't work

I read about a switch to XCB which was done recently. Is this maybe
related?.

Any pointers as to what I can try?.
