I can confirm that Hardy can run Mesa 7.1 and xf86-video-ati 6.8.191
with DRM 1.29.0 and fully supports the r5xx series. You'll have to build
the packages yourself, or try the xorg-edgers binaries. Also you'll need
a decently recent X server for AIGLX.
