Notification on output hotplug

IIRC the problem with polling is power consumption. I remember KeithP (I 
think) mentioning a while back that they had some power level measuring 
gadgetry and they could do some tests on what effect it had... don't 
remember seeing a follow up (but I could easily have missed it).
