For the record this appears to have been a build or Xserver
compatibility issue.  I have upgraded to a newer Debian package for
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.4.1~git20080517-1) and rebuilt the Intel driver,
and all is well once again.  Thanks for the assistance, and sorry for
the noise.
