X-Server 1.5.0 very sluggish

has the kernel been able to load the drm and radeon module without
problems?! try looking in dmesg and lsmod if it failed somehow. if i
remember well the new drm needs a patch in the linux kernel (the
2.6.27 should have it installed, but older versions shouldn't).
