hiya jim, hi daniel, thanks for responding.

it's the npapi plugin capability that i want - the ability to plug in
an arbitrary XWindows application into a web browser - not the X
compression.  it looks like LBX was utilised in rxr because it was not
just a channel for x-window events but also for x-window
authentication.

it looks like rxr got chopped off at the knees (removal of LBX), and
then grew another pair of legs (in the form of xnest) as there appears
to be a _second_ plugin in rxr, called xnest-plugin, buti haven't yet
been able to ascertain whether rxr/xnest-plugin is still dependent on
lbx or not.

so, if i manage to work it out, and cut out lbx, and go for "direct"
running of commands to put into to xnest, it might _vaguely_ be
possible to run ssh -X <remote system> but that's not really of
interest to me: what's of interest to me is running _local_
x-applications (as the user who is running the web browser).

if i work it out, i'll let you know - there'll be a new plugin to run
x-windows apps embedded in web browsers.
