MousePreInit() -> InitProtocols() -> xf86OSMouseInit()
the default protocol is decided by DefaultProtocol() in bsd_mouse.c (in your
case, anyway).

I think in 1.4, xf86OSMouseInit was still in the server, so maybe there's some
conflicts there.
