HW vs SW cursor confusion

Well, if you don't have a HW cursor, just use SW.

It sounds like you're trying to hide the cursor as part of a custom
embedded setup. Why not leverage HideCursor/ShowCursor from Xfixes? You
can just hide the cursor for the root window and it shouldn't show up
anywhere else.
