1.6.4 brown-bag DGA fixes

heh. 1.6 is supposed to not break stuff, so we'll avoid that for now.

I suggest that the patch be applied as-is to 1.7 and we consider
whacking DGA around for 1.8. I want to cherry-pick this back and push
a 1.6.5 out asap; 1.6.4 needs to get replaced.
