For the archives (for those searching for this same assertion error):

I rebuilt xorg-server 1.6.5 (now using the newer libX11) and that also 
fixed my problem with openoffice. Problem appears to have been caused by 
upgrading libX11 shared library without rebuilding the xorg-server using 
it. I guess a xorg-server should had a more specific ABI requirement.
