live X on nVidia at 1024x768

Hi,
I've started up xorg on a machine with an nVidia VGA
card, and the autodetected highest resolution is 800x600.
I know that the machine is able to run in 1024x768 too,
because a WinXP is producing it on that hardware.
The situation is a bit more difficult than You would
thing, because my linux system is a live one built
on top of Ubuntu Karmic. The same system should work
well on lots of other hardware.
Can You please tell me how to reach the desired resolution?
