The machine I want to 'ssh -Y -l gene shop' is running ubuntu 10.4 LTS on
an Athlon xp1400 that is running at 1600 on that motherboard.

'emc' is emc-2.4.6, best explained by looking at the emc wiki, at

Hand made, I've probably made 4 or 5 hundred of them over the years as the
CE of a TV station. But this has little to do with why I can't ssh -Y into
that machine from this one, and start emc so I can write code and cut
imaginary air, seeing the results on my screen from the exported X session.
The ssh session itself works flawlessly, but starting an app that needs an
X display fails.
