That worked! I changed "Visual Effects" in Gnome from "Normal" to "None",
and restarted gdm, and now the gnome session on the left window is visible
and working fine again.

Don't know if you saw it but I've disabled Xinerama in the xorg.conf:

 Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "Xinerama" "0"
 EndSection

And that's intentional. I want to be able to switch between workspaces
independently on the two displays.
