Is Xorg aware of text areas?

I'm trying to figure out how I can create some program/script that
automatically brings up a keyboard when a text field is active. Therefore I
need something to tell me whether or not a text area is active, and I was
curious if that's something Xorg would be able to tell me or if it would be
the window manager that would get that kind of information. Any pointers on
where to look would be appreciated! Thanks!
