wrong display size

Thx for the suggestion.
I made several tries with xrandr. All without success. See also
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96453
'xrandr --output LVDS1 --fb 640x480' returns 'specified screen 640x480
not large enough for LVDS1 (1024x768+0+0)'.
There is no visible scroll bar.
