I don't have any direct opinions on the suggestion above, except that
I very strongly suggest implementing things like this if and only if
they first appear in the language-bindings recommendations appendix of
the cairo manual.

The goal is that all such decisions are made once so that we have
as much uniformity as possible in the various language bindings.
