PSD is a bitmapped format, with layers.  The Gimp can convert PSD to
XCF; if you don't mind having all the layers merged it can also
convert them to PNG, but, depending on the images, merging the layers
may lose a lot of information; in that case it would be better to keep
them in a format that supports layers.
