I don't see any reason to do it on the freedesktop.org server.

If it works, and is a useful thing to do, we can roll it into the
release procedure, and whoever's doing the release can run it locally
before uploading the release.  If we work it right, each thumbnail
should only have to have this done to it one time.

Ugh, nevermind:  it doesn't seem to solve the problem.  I'm confused
about how this case differs from the problem it does solve, but in any
event it doesn't help.
