My own try: opened the file in a text editor (gedit) and deleted 
*everything* from <i:pgf id="adobe_illustrator_pgf"> to </i:pgf>
Now the file is only about 33 kB and open just fine both in Inkscape and eog

the removal of this junk delimited by the <i> and </i> tags should be 
easily scriptable
