But we need some sort of prize for a contest...

I don't think this is best handled with a contest: a contest rewards 
elaborated images, but the most useful map symbols are the opposite: 
small, plain, but useful. How fancy (fancy enough to win a contest) can 
someone draw a ground tile? Everybody would go for castles.
