[Clipart] what is clipart?

Hi all

I could well be making an idiot of myself here but that never stopped
me before ...

Just what is 'clipart" supposed to be?  I have tried to start
reviewing stuff, to lend a hand,  and there is the most amazing
variety of stuff, a whole pile of stuff that I could not imagine
anyone wanting as clipart (and yet it gets downloaded).  Also a pile
of traced images, how do they fit into the picture, so to speak?

Am I being too pedantic?
