unplugging devices safely?

after unmounting the device the module still remains loaded, and the device 
still present in lshal. removing the sbp2 driver tells me it's ok to 
disconnect on the ipod's screen but when i remove and re-plug it it's not 
picked up on until i manually modprobe the sbp2, then HAL picks up on it.
Is there a planned solution to fix the problem as a whole, possibly how XP 
has the 'safely remove devices' applet in the systray?
