All,

The minutes of the release wranglers call today:

Attendees:

Jim Gettys
Alan Coopersmith
Howard Greenwell
Stuart Kreitman
Egbert Eich
Paul Anderson
Kevin Martin
Keith Packard

Minutes:

1. Status

Egbert set up new branch "-TM" for over the weekend.

Investigated the sleep issue, and why it happens. Made comment on the bugzilla
Prepared the tree for the branching of the trademark issues.
Backed out Mike's changes as discussed on the call.
Ready to start with the trademark issues on the new branch.
Needto to debug problem on why VNC does not work any more.
Changes in "waitfor" broke things in DDX. Need to be careful if changes are
made in DDX and DIX.

2. Open Bug status.

Much discussion on freetype issues over the weekend. Change made by Keith
will slow down east Asian fonts by 8-10 times. Egbert thought about the
issue. Has a solution that will not please everyone, but everyone can live
with.
People who set freetype2 to null will get the old behavoir.
Everyone who uses the external library will get the changes that Keith has
made.
East Asian will have to set freetype2 to NO. Everyone should build the
default way and get the new behavoir.
Perhaps someone will come up with a better change, but in the absense of
this, Egbert will implement his solution.
Jim thinks this solution will be fine for that.

Egbert agreed to put a bug in bugzilla for the freetype issues. Jim also
asked for a "superbug" to be raised to block the next release - related to
this issue.

303 - Suspect this was a problem with the changes Mike committed. Should be
fixed when back out Mike changes.

Egbert acknowledged the agreement from Friday that we need to get a release
out soon. Should call it a release for the press. Plan to do another
release shortly thereafter.

Egbert reported that the sleep problem is not in the code exhibiting the
problem. Previous code entered by David in 1999 did not check the
permissions. Recent code tries to fix the permissions, without failing, but
when the ownership changes fail. Some detailed discussions on ramifications.

Jim argued that the sleep statement does not help the current situation.
Have not solved the original problem.
Jim/Stuart agreed that need to get a bugzilla entry to remind people about
the problem.
Need to be careful of security issues. Jim indicated that report should
just indicate the detail of the problem. Not what the effects are.

Egbert changed view from Friday - No handshaking problem. Problem with
x11-unix is entirely an X11 problem. The libise-unix problem happens all
the time. If the directory is owned by root it is ok. Delete the directory,
causes the problem when the directory is created and becomes own by the
person running directory.
Real problem is that multiple people use the same directory.
libice should not have used the functions from the transport code. libice
should have created a directory that is owned by the user, and contain the
name of the user in it's name.

Jim proposed that the errors seem OK as the stand. Create bug in bugzilla
to describe problem, and then work with mail list to come up with proper
solution.
No objection.
Jim will take action item start discussion on "xdg" or appropriate mail
list to work out how to solve this problem correctly.

Jim thinks this is only a denial of service problem. Not enough people have
experience of libice.

(Howard left call to join Architecture Call).

Howard.
