[SCIM] problems using scim

Hi all, I'm trying to use scim with Kanotix which is a
debian-based distribution.  I've "apt-get install scim
scim-chinese scim-gtk2-immodule scim0tables-zh" and
installed ttf-arphic-bsmi00lp, ttf-arphic-bkai00mp,
etc.  Then I "export XMODIFIERS=@im=scim" and run
"scim".  I can then use Ctrl+space to bring up the
input panel when I'm in the Firefox browser and
correctly enter Chinese characters but in any other
application, I cannot bring up the input panel. 
Pressing Ctrl+space does not do anything.  I've tried
it on OpenOffice, Kwrite, Konsole, Kedit, Kate.  If
anyone has any ideas why scim only works in Firefox
for me, I'd be most grateful to hear them.  Thank you.
