[Uim] Running uim in enlightenment (newbie question)

This is a very elementary question, I'm afraid; if somebody has a
moment, and doesn't mind explaining a few basics, that would be very
kind.
I'm trying to set up uim/scim/anthy on my desktop (a Gentoo box, with
Enlightenment 16 as the windows manager). To this end, I've been
following the instructions linked through the uim wiki ("Internationalization
in Mandrakelinux 10.1: a mini guide to SCIM/UIM"). Obviously, its not
entirely analogous to my own environment, but for the most part its
still applicable.
I have (as near as I can tell) successfully installed the various
packages related to uim, scim and anthy.
The guide then says to add the following lines to my ~/.i18n:
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
I added them to my ~/.xinitrc, as I don't have an ~/.i18n, and the
explaination says that I just want these lines run when X starts.
The guide then says, "When you start a new session, you will see a
keyboard icon in your systray."
Enlightenment, of course, doesn't come with any sort of system tray. I
tried installing pypanel (http://pypanel.sourceforge.net), but it didn't
seem to work. At least, launching pypanel out of the box, without any
additional config over what's listed above, didn't result in a keyboard
icon when I restarted X.
So now I'm wondering if I should be looking for another system tray, if
pypanel should work, but I'm just missing a step, or if its a fool's
mission to try to use uim with Enlightenment.
I wondered if anyone on this list has any pointers to offer, or could
shed a little light on this for me. I'm afraid I know very little about
this sort of thing, which, of course, is part of the problem :(
Alternatively, if someone might be able to point me towards some
applicable docs, that would be appreciated. So far, all of the ones I've
come across assume Gnome or KDE as the windows manager, with a systray
already in place.
Thank you for your time!
Steph
