Perfect! The "fails.pcap" trace shows exactly the symptom of bug #3210.
At this point you might file a bug with Sun, pointing them at this
commit:
  http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/xorg/GL/glx/glxcmds.c?r1=1.6&r2=1.7
and the comment near the top of our GLX description:
  http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xcb/proto.git;a=blob;f=src/glx.xml

You can take this opportunity to remind them about the value of
contributing the Sun Ray drivers upstream to get the benefits of
upstream bug fixes. :-)

Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide how to implement the workaround for
this. I'm hoping that the reason it's not going well is only that I'm
currently ill and my brain isn't functioning...

This is a pure X server bug; the Mesa version doesn't matter.
