XKB error message with Xorg-6.8.1

I don't know what is the root cause of this but I had the same error and the 
same experience while trying to modify keyboard settings through 
gnome-control-center. The way I fixed this was to invoke gconf-editor and set 
the /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb entries manually.
