X unusable from x11perf

Not sure if the problem is with X, NetBSD or my hardware.

I ran "x11perf -all" from:

X Window System Version 6.8.99.903 (6.9.0 RC 3)
Release Date: 03 December 2005 + cvs

on NetBSD/i386 2.0.2 and my video hardware is a 3dfx Banshee.

My /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old ended with:

Resetting FIFO
Resetting FIFO
Resetting FIFO
(EE) TDFX(0): Board is not responding.

My mouse pointer would move around, but couldn't select or click or type
anything. I could login remotely via ssh fine. Xorg was using around 99%
CPU. I killed x11perf (with SIGKILL since it wouldn't die) and waited for
a few minutes but X was still unusable. I killed Xorg (also with SIGKILL
since it wouldn't die). For some reason, I never received any console back
and my display still showed the hung X (and of course the pointer was not
movable now).

x11perf started with:

x11perf - X11 performance program, version 1.5
The X.Org Foundation server version 60899903 on :0.0

and the last data I saved from it is:

  144000 reps @ 0.0418 msec ( 23900.0/sec): 100x100 stippled rectangle
(8x8 stipple)
  144000 reps @ 0.0418 msec ( 23900.0/sec): 100x100 stippled rectangle

  144000 reps @ 0.0416 msec ( 24000.0/sec): 100x100 stippled rectangle

  720000 trep @ 0.0417 msec ( 24000.0/sec): 100x100 stippled rectangle
(8x8 stipple)

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?
