invoke new X without disturbing DPMS of old

No dice.

DISPLAY=":0" XAUTHORITY="/var/gdm/:0.Xauth" xset dpms force off is the first 
command I issued. The monitor did turn off. However after the ":1" session 
closes the monitor turns back on.

I don't think when X switches back to ":0", that it regards the state of 
dpms for ":0".
