Using the external video on a laptop

I have two laptops using linux and xorg 6.8.2, one with a i855GM and
the other with a i830CGC.  I'd like to find information on how to
write a xorg.conf where both the TFT and the external monitor show the
same picture.  I'm not talking dynamic reconfiguration at that point,
I'd just like to be able to activate it and do it under xorg's control
(e.g. not with i855crt).

Is that actually possible?  Or even if the driver is not able to do it
yet, how is the conf supposed to look like anyway?  I've been unable
to find any decent documentation on the subject, it tends to be either
xinerama between two different cards or nvidia-specific.
