xfs and gdm

Dear List,

I am a new member of this list so forgive me if I breach a protocol.  I
have been having a problem with 3 Fedora Core 4 systems.  Each system
has functioned well until last weekend the 14th of January.  In each
case the gui login screen became unusable giving me the appearance of a
resolution problem.  One machine was a fresh install that functioned
without difficulty until a system update was done with yum -y update.
After the update I have been unable to use the gui to login nor will it
respond to startx.  

In looking at this problem in each case xfs is not running and gives me
a "segmentation fault" error when I try to run it manually.

I posted this problem on the Fedora user's list, but have not been able
to glean a solution.  I did report this to Red Hat via:

but RH referred me back to the Fedora user's list as well as xorg.  

Has anyone else reported this scenario with the recent update of xorg in
Fedora?  Otherwise, I would sure appreciate your help in solving the
problem.
