5fps in Quake3 doesn't sound like hardware accelerated rendering.
What's the output of the following command:
glxinfo | grep direct
If it's "direct rendering: No", then you're getting software rendering.
That would explain why it's so slow. :) Of course, that doesn't
explain why you're getting software rendering, but it's a step.
Or are you now saying that Quake3 gets a reasonable framerate but the
other games get 5fps? If that's the case, then I'm not sure what the
problem might be.
